Appointments News: Alumna Gena Truitt to Serve on State Veterans Commission

1397607_720700151314292_712004691604139364_o.jpgGov­er­nor Jerry Brown has nom­i­nated 2013 SDLA Alumna Gena Tru­itt to serve on the Cal­i­for­nia Vet­er­ans Board. Gena has been case man­ager at U.S. VETS since 2013. She was vet­er­ans advo­cate at Inter­faith Com­mu­nity Ser­vices from 2012 to 2013, fam­ily sup­port part­ner at Men­tal Health Sys­tems, Courage to Call in 2012 and assis­tant and intern in U.S. Sen­a­tor Bar­bara Boxer’s San Diego Dis­trict Office from 2011 to 2012. Gena served in the U.S. Navy from 2000 to 2004. She earned a Mas­ter of Social Work degree from the Uni­ver­sity of South­ern California.

Appointments News: Two SDLA Alumni to Serve on the Human Relations Commission

Char­lie Gillig and Jes­sica Nare of the San Diego Lead­er­ship Alliance (SDLA2013 Class have been appointed to the City of San Diego’s Human Relation’s Com­mis­sion, which, among other activ­i­ties, works to ensure that all city res­i­dents have equal access to eco­nomic, polit­i­cal and edu­ca­tional oppor­tu­ni­ties and equal access to ser­vice pro­tec­tion and accom­mo­da­tion in all busi­nesses and pub­lic agencies.

SDLA Alumni Appointed to City International Affairs Board

Two alumni of the San Diego Lead­er­ship Alliance (SDLA), Roberto Alcan­tar (Class of 2012) and Mark Leo (Class of 2013) have been appointed to the City of San Diego’s Inter­na­tional Affairs Board. The board aims to fos­ter friendly rela­tions, bet­ter under­stand­ing, eco­nomic coop­er­a­tion, and cul­tural inter­change between the U.S. and other countries.

The Institute - Session #8 - Canvassing in City Heights

The spring sun shone brightly through the windows of Shawna’s car as we stepped out into the end of 37th Street in Normal Heights. Today was the canvassing session of the Institute, where the fellows would get the opportunity to get to have face-to-face contact with community members about a particular issue. I quietly trailed SDLA Fellows Luis Osuna and Shawna Held as they made their way down the block, trying to make sense of the address list in hand.

The Institute- Session #7 - Public Policy - Understanding and Engaging with the Issues

As soon as I arrived at the seventh session of the Institute, I could see the SDLA fellows had already eagerly started into an engaging and informative day of talks on public policy. After an active team building break outside to kick off the mid-morning, the group jumped into discussions of all kind of policy approaches, ranging from healthcare to environmental impacts and coalition building. The day served as a continuation of the public policy discussion in the 3rd session of the Institute.
